New Media Literacy and Popular Culture in Education
Current and emerging technologies continue to change how individuals gather information; design, produce and disseminate texts; and participate in both local and global communities through print- and screen-based platforms. In this course, we will examine the relationship between new media literacy and popular culture in education. We will begin with consequences of the digital revolution and explore conceptualizations of literacy - from reading and writing to multimodality, convergence, and participation. We will consider how new media literacy linked to popular culture has the potential to influence self-expression and shape social action across contexts. In other words, how do youth and adults negotiate meaning with today´s technologies and engage in participatory cultures? Embedded in the pedagogical approach are possible directions for practice and research in education.
