The James Baldwin Essay Prize
The James Baldwin Essay Prize of $600.00 honors the best essay on any subject related to African-American culture and life in the United States. This competition is open to all Washington University undergraduate students. Papers must originate as a course assignment or faculty-supervised project and require a faculty nomination. Faculty members may nominate any number of papers. The essay must be no fewer than five (5) and no more than ten (10) double-spaced pages, not including cover page and references, if included.
The Julius Nyerere Essay Prize
The Julius Nyerere Essay Prize of $600.00 honors the best essay on any subject related to African culture and life. The Sylvia Wynter Essay Prize
The Sylvia Wynter Essay Prize of $600.00 honors the best essay on any subject related to African culture and life in the Caribbean, South America, Central America, or North America outside of the United States. This competition is open to all Washington University undergraduate and graduate students. Papers must originate as a course assignment or faculty-supervised project and require a faculty nomination. Faculty members may nominate any number of papers. The essay must be no fewer than five (5) and no more than ten (10) double-spaced pages, not including cover page and references, if included.
The Ralph Bunche Prize
The Ralph Bunche Prize of $100.00 is named for the Nobel Peace prize-winning diplomat and is awarded to the best political science essay about Africans or African-Americans. This competition is open to all Washington University undergraduate students. Papers must originate as a course assignment or faculty-supervised project and require a faculty nomination. Faculty members may nominate any number of papers. The essay must be no fewer than five (5) and no more than ten (10) double-spaced pages, not including cover page and references, if included.
The Henry Hampton Prize
The Henry Hampton Prize of $100.00 is awarded to the best essay on any subject related the United States’ civil rights movement or on any book by or about the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This competition is open to all Washington University undergraduate students. The essay must be no fewer than two (2) and no more than five (5) double-spaced pages, not including cover page and references, if included.
The Louis Lomax Journalism Prize
The Louis Lomax Journalism Prize of $100.00 is awarded to the best piece of journalism (e.g., feature story, opinion column, or news story) on any theme related to black culture and life, broadly defined, which was published in any publication during the previous academic year. This competition is open to all authors who were Washington University undergraduate students at the time of the publication. The submission must be a PDF file of the actual publication and must be no fewer than one (1) and no more than ten (10) pages in published form.
All submissions are due April 19, 2013 by 4:00 p.m. in the AFAS Office, McMillan 226.
