AFAS Featured Event: Dr. John Mundell speaks on The Drag of Mestiça Nationalism

Dr. Mundell is an interdisciplinary scholar of Black queer studies & critical whiteness in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Luso-Atlantic world. His research considers the pivotal role of literature & pop culture in  racial formations, focusing on how national narratives of a harmonious race mixture are dependent on Black queer abjection in the name of progress. His manuscript, "Longing for a Racial Democracy: Race, Sex, & Popular Culture in Brazil", re-centers sex & desire in Brazil’s myth of racial democracy through an analysis of literature, theatre, film, music, & more.
