National Museum of African American History & Culture: Miles Davis, Modes and Modalities: Exhibit Opening

The Smithsonian's Center for the Digitization and Curation of African American History is working with communities and cultural and educational institutions across Greater St. Louis for its 2024 Community Curation Program. This exhibition is part of the 2024 Community Curation series.

Irreducible and indescribable, Miles Davis was a complex individual whose groundbreaking music was continually evolving. This exhibit explores Miles’ engagement with innovative musicians and new technologies, as well as Miles’ personality rooted in his childhood in East St. Louis and tempered by the rapidly changing cultural milieu during the five decades of his musical career.  Prince Wells III, Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Music at Southern Illinois University, will make a brief presentation at the opening.

Join us at this FREE exhibit opening for a first look at a new exploration of music icon and East St. Louisan Miles Davis. In the exhibit, music, fashion, inspirations, passions, and creativity intersect to paint an enthralling portrait of, “The Man With the Horn." Guest of honor is Prince Wells III. Prof. Wells has explored, played, written, and studied music in all of its forms. This exhibit is presented by SIUE, House of Miles EStL, STCCHS, and the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture.
