The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation honors the legacy and impact of Dred Scott in the struggle for racial equality. The Foundation honors this legacy and impact through initiatives focusing on commemoration, education, and reconciliation.
The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation has selected AFAS and History Professor Sowande' Mustakeem as a recipient of its 2020 Dred Scott Freedom Award in the category of Historical Literary Excellence for her multiple award winning book Slavery at Sea: Terror, Sex, and Sickness in the Middle Passage (University of Illinois Press, 2016).
The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation was created to honor the legacy and impact of Dred Scott in the struggle for racial equality, through initiatives focusing on commemoration, education, and reconciliation. Professor Mustakeem will be honored at the Foundation's March 28, 2020 gala, 400+ Years of Fortitude, 1619-2019.
Slavery at Sea also won the Wesley-Logan Prize by the American Historical Association (AHA) in 2017, which is awarded to the best book on the history of the African Diaspora.
