Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom

A fundamental component of the AFAS degree program is experiential learning, which emphasizes "learning by doing" and subsequent reflection on these experiences. Our department offers various pathways for students to engage in experiential learning. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with esteemed faculty through independent studies, gain practical experience by interning with one of our core community partner agencies, participate in study abroad programs in African countries, serve as teaching assistants for our courses, and receive funding for projects and fellowships. We are dedicated to equipping our students with the skills and experiences necessary for their professional development beyond their time at WashU.
